Working Dog Program

Harness their drive instinct

Foundational training for future police and military, detection, search & rescue, or personal protection dogs.

Our Working Dog Training Approach

Obedience training that doesn’t diminish their drive.

To have a successful career, working dog prospects need foundational obedience training that guides their drive from the beginning. Working breeds like Belgian Malinois, German Shepards, retrievers, and Dobermans have incredible natural instincts. These intelligent breeds benefit from engaged training, multi-environmental exposure, and guided socialization that points their innate drive in a focused direction.

Beginning their training foundation at as young as four months prepares your working dog to become a highly skilled and loyal companion, no matter the role they fill.

Our Outcomes

We prepare working dogs for specialized training and advanced work

Our working dog programs support the training needs of:

Professional Owners & Handlers

For trainers, handlers, and experienced working dog owners, our training program prepares high-potential dogs for the next level of specialized training. We help develop the obedience, drive control, environmental confidence, and handler responsiveness a working dog needs before moving into advanced sport, protection, detection, or role-specific work.

After completing our program, your dog will be more focused, composed, and responsive to direction, giving you a stronger foundation to build on as training becomes more specialized.

Active Homes

Many owners are drawn to working breeds because they’re intelligent, loyal, alert, and highly trainable. Whether you want a dog for personal security, an active outdoor lifestyle, or a more structured home environment, we work with you to understand your goals and shape the training around your dog’s temperament and potential.

Our training program helps working dogs develop obedience, confidence, impulse control, and protective instincts without dulling their natural drive. We teach dogs how to respond to their handler, stay composed in active situations, and disengage when directed, creating a more reliable companion for structured, active homes.

Organizations or Departments

For departments, agencies, and organizations evaluating future working dogs, early foundation training helps determine whether a dog has the stability, drive, and trainability needed for more advanced work.

Our program develops obedience, environmental confidence, handler responsiveness, and early drive-building skills so each dog can be better evaluated for future service, detection, search and rescue, or other specialized roles.

  • My puppy is a completely different animal after spending a month with Randy and Bridget. The phrase “night and day difference” doesn’t even do it justice. My puppy obeys commands the first time and has great manners around people and other dogs.

  • Randy's knowledge of dogs is incredible, and his training skills are exceptional. His success in both breeding and field trials speaks volumes about his dedication. I wholeheartedly recommend Randy and Crosscounty Kennels to anyone looking for a skilled trainer.

    — Eric B.

  • Whether it's boarding or training, we trust their team completely. We will absolutely be using Crosscountry Kennels for all of our future boarding and training needs and highly recommend them to anyone looking for top-quality care for their dog.

We Believe

Engaged training brings out your working dog’s best potential

I’ve spent much of my life working with dogs, first through years of training and competing with bird dogs and later through breeding and competing with Belgian Malinois. That’s given me an instinctive understanding of how dogs develop—their temperament, drive, instincts, and what kind of handling brings out their best. Over the years, I’ve earned more than 1,000 placements, developed champions, won multiple Dog of the Year honors, and had two dogs inducted into the Field Trial Hall of Fame.

Today, I focus my time and attention on preparing high-potential dogs for a successful future, often in the fields of police work, detection, search & rescue, or security. It’s an intensive process that takes considerable energy and patience, but there’s no better payoff than seeing a good dog with an attentive owner reach their maximum potential.

In the end, my goal is to develop excellent dogs their owners are proud to partner with.
